The McConnell Lake Campgrounds are not serviced/protected by any municipal fire department. A reported fire from here is considered a potential forest fire and the MNR fire response department is notified.

No immediate response is guaranteed

  • As responsible campers, we have a plan to respond in the unlikely event of a major fire. Please keep in mind that your safety comes first.
  • Upon discovering a fire, that’s out of control, notify the Blue Lake Office immediately, 705-892-2310 and call 911.

If you cannot contact the office, this is the plan:

  • There are barrels full of water with buckets in them located at each outhouse for quick response to minor fires. As well there is an accessible fire extinguisher located at each campground. At Little McDougal it is site 48, Blue Lake at the office and Boland Lake the first outhouse on the left. Please make yourselves familiar with these locations.
  • The fire trailer is parked at the firewood lot, to the right, behind the office at Blue Lake. The trailer has equipment ready to fight a major fire. The trailer has a 2” ball hitch, a 5.5 gas powered water pump, 3- 50’ lengths of 2” camlock hose, a high pressure nozzle, 1-1000 litre tank full of water, 1-1000 litre tank empty and 2 -50 gallon empty barrels.
  • At the outhouse by the office at Blue Lake there is a 6.5hp gas water pump and hoses.
  • The 6.5 hp gas water pump is your transfer pump. In an emergency situation, it is positioned at a water source as close to the fire as possible.
  • You must designate someone to man this pump.
  • If you are unsure how to operate a gas water pump, please familiarize yourself as soon as possible. See us at the office. The next step is to enlist as many pickup trucks as possible, either at Blue Lake or at the scene of the fire. Up to four trucks are required.
  • From the trailer, give the empty 1000 litre tank and 2 empty barrels to each truck. These are your tanker trucks.
  • Position the fire trailer a safe distance from the fire, but within 150’ of the fire. Be sure to position the trailer so that the tanker trucks can pull up beside you when they return with water.
  • The trailer has a gas pump on-board. This is your fire fighting pump.
  • Use the full 1000 litre tank with the gas pump, hose and high pressure nozzle. It may be preferable to contain the fire as opposed to trying to extinguish it. This will be your call to make.
  • If you wish to familiarize yourself with the firefighting pump, do so as soon as possible. See us at the office.
  • Once the previously full 1000 litre tank is empty, give it to another pickup truck, so that, ideally, you have 3 tanker trucks transporting water.
  • In a prolonged fire fighting scene, gas will be needed for the pumps. Think about this and ask for help.
  • If a malfunction occurs with the plan, there is a tote on board containing several buckets. Form a bucket brigade as a last resort.

VIP

It is important that all persons are aware of the evacuation/assembly/accounting area.

If evacuation is necessary we assemble at:

  • Little McDougal Campground: Little McDougal Beach
  • Blue Lake Campground: Blue Lake Boat Launch
  • Boland Lake: Boland Beach Area

We know it sounds paranoid, but please ensure everyone in your party, especially children and elderly, know about your accounting area designation.

Come over to the office to familiarize yourself with the equipment.

Best way to prevent fire is being careful. Please do not put anyone in danger while trying to put out a fire. Be Safe!
